What Gen Younger Men Gave Up Caring About A DL?

My stepson waited till he was 18 to have the desire to buy a car ( this was 8-10 yrs ago and I actually forget when he got his DL) and wanted to buy a brand new car with No driving experience, we talked him into Kathy’s 1996 Explorer, I got my Learners permit at 15 and couldn’t wait to get my regular license for the Freedom that came with it, when did guys/gals quit caring about that?

Alot of people in the cities refuse to get licenses or cars. I think it's because it's expensive and also tough driving in the cities.

With a Farm Permit did you need an 18 yr old licensed driver with you? that was a restriction here with a 15 year old learners permit, my dad had me driving his truck around St Pete a little from age 13 to 14 then everywhere when I got that permit, wasn't allowed to drive on school property without a regular lic., Gfriend always got pissed off having to walk off school property lol, funny thing was after I got my regular lic. a teacher told me not to drive dads truck on school prop. big block FE Granny 4 spd, 2 blown mufflers WO tail pipes

My kids wanted to drive, both got their licenses ASAP, my daughter got delayed because of the Covid BS but she never had to take a driving test, the examiner asked me about her ability. Kids that wait till they are 18 and don't go through the driving instruction INO are horrible drivers, many I know have gotten into wrecks.

My oldest step daughter use to make me a nervous wreck riding with her when she was 16, 4’10” tall and bought a small Caddy but she could barely see over the steering wheel and 1 time on the interstate around 70 mph she started texting someone when I Semi blew up and told her Stop Fucking around and pay attention, she’s a very good driver now that 16 more yrs have past

Sometimes you have to be an asshole to make a point. Glad it worked.

I started driving the field truck at 9, mostly to collect hay bales. Then dad started farming a couple remote fields owned by friends and I got the chance to drive both the flatbed and the F250 on the roads, boy what a thrill, probably around 11. Then when I got my permit and started driving legit, mom was normally the co-pilot and she was petrified because I was driving like a punk, but had years of experience and she always had her arms straight down, punching the seat cushion down to the floorboard.......like that'll help?? Anyway, I backed off and drove under the limit, looked both ways twice and always drove to her acceptance. That all changed at 16.

Probably about 7 when I started driving tractor raking hay & pulling hay wagon.
Then about the same time i was 7 or 8 my Dad built me a tractor, but it was more of a hot rod 6 hp Briggs centrifugal clutch, 36 chevy 3 speed & rear end narrowed, Model A fenders. I would hit about 25 mph I sure tore up the country road we lived on. When I was 12 or 13 I bought a Honda 50CC bike & run the hell out of it.
Couple years later I bought a 175 Scrambler Honda new off the showroom floor. Got my DL on my 16th birthday I think I got my motorcycle endorsement, a week of 2 later.

I mowed yards for 3 years to save for a car. My dad kicked in to help out. I was almost 16 when we bought a 1978 Volkswagen Scirocco. I ran the snot out of it for a couple years till I found a Mustang.

I owned 5 motorcycles before I traded for my first car. Growing up poor I was grateful for my Honda CL175 because I could get a job washing dishes at a local truckstop. Never had to worry about having an older licensee riding in the front seat.
I learned the hard way how to be a defensive driver/ rider, my life depended on it.

When I was 15 or 16? My dad came home with a 62 Harley DuoGlide that was Red that faded to a Pinkish Red, White Buddy seat and White fiberglass saddle bags ( looked like a woman’s bike) at the time my friend and me had went in half on a Yamaha YZ ? either 125 or 250 can’t remember but we bugged my dad to buy the Harley, I was asking to ride it and he was still telling how to start it and ride when I was pulling out of the driveway 😁 he wouldn’t sell it to us though, sold it to a friend of his 😢 his Appl. store was also a kind of swap/pawn shop, I ended up buying a 65 or 66 BSA 650

I'd like to have a CL77 Honda, but I wouldn't be able to ride it very long. They were vibraters bad, but they sure sounded sweet. Just had a unique sound, imagine a 9000 rpm JD.

I am not lying !
My dad was born in 1920 and in 1932, at 12 years old in the middle of the depression, he would drive a
logging truck from 50 miles west of Richmond VA round trip every day.
Not sure if this was for his father and how much he was paid ?
I know he was paid 50 cents to pick corn all day back then.
And this was ~ 70 years after slavery ended ?

Nobody offered him "reparations !"
