On The Road Again... California 2024

3 long days of driving, we are now outside of Winslow AZ.

Last night we were in Amarillo, the KOA was not bad but the wind was horrible! I expected to wake up to torn toppers but they held in there.
First thing we did was go to the Cadillac Ranch.

We then ran a couple of errands and went to the Big Texan Steak House:

Headwinds on I-40 were bad today, sometimes I was having trouble keeping it at 65, speed limit is 75. New Mexico's roads are not that great. The route follows the old Route 66, we did drive through Tucumcari just to see Route 66 stuff.
Wait till you hit AZ I-40. Was that phone still ringing at the KOA?

No, the phone was quiet, just the wind kept us up.

So far AZ I-40 is ok but not great, we will be leaving I-40 westbound tomorrow heading up 89 but will be on it some from CA to AZ on the return trip.

The worst roads were in Memphis, least maintained everything is New Mexico including rest areas, road conditions and signage. Texas and their service roads are damn confusing! Thank goodness for Google Maps. Most challenging part of I-40 is North Carolina's mountains and navigating Nashville and Oklahoma City.

Fuel has been in the mid $3 a gallon range, starting to go up in price now but about the same as NC's prices. We are using a fleet discount card and fuel apps to try and save money. Loves has been our stations of choice.

Did you say you were going to take 89A across Marble Canyon?

I worked at a truck stop across from the Air Force base on I-10 in 1980 in Yuma, did you get any pics “standing on a corner in Winslow Az”?

I can’t remember the name but when I was 10 yrs old I rode with cousins out west and stood on 4 state medallion at 1 time, also got stuck barefoot in Death Valley hiking when I knotted my shoes together lol

Wow!!! US 89A in Northern Arizona has to be the most fantastically beautiful road in the US, a hidden gem! It leave US 89 at a pretty no descript intersection and heads West, before you are cliffs and gulches. As you drive closer to the Marble Canyon you come to the Colorado River. Do not take an RV in the first parking area but go to the Glen Canyon, Lees Ferry National Recreation area, hang your America the Beautiful pass up and
enjoy the awesomeness.
We found a nice spot to park and have lunch.

As you continue West on 89A you pass the Vermillion Cliffs, and eventually a mountain range, not a hard pull but you peak at Jacobs Lake, 8000 ft, the entrance to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon that is still closed for winter. Beautiful pine forest but there were signs of forest fires.

Heading down you go into more of the Arizona Strip, passing Colorado City and then into Utah.

We are in Hurricane UT that lives up to its name, wind has been crazy. Hurricane is the closest city to Zion National Park. Also home to You Tuber Matts Off Road Recovery. We are in Sand Hollow State Park, here is a view from our camper.

Loving your pictorial! That's a portion of the most spectacular terrain in the US that we skipped, turned back south at Flagstaff. Sometimes a known attraction is better left to draw you back for another round. Did you stop at Mary's Cafe in Flagstaff?

No Mary's Cafe. We left Flagstaff on the East side but will be returning on the Eastbound portion of the trip to go to the South Rim.

Getting off the Interstates is key, I-40 was beginning to be a real drag, all of the trucks and poor roads.

As for traffic, LA is only a few days away.

So true....those lesser highways are always a treat. Big highways, especially 40 are just stressful and for me, I'm constantly thinking I'm passing up opportunities by the second.

That one stretch gets the tight spots out of the steering, don't it.

I loved the Aspen tree forest in Flagstaff. And there was a volcanic field of solid black obsidian rock somewhere ?
