Having Fun at Every Turn - Oil Plug Destroyed

Microsoft's New Years Gift to you! No Sleep! :)

Nah, I had the exchange server fixed by 4:30am. Quick search revealed the issue, shut the malware engine off, and restarted the transport service. Easy peasy.

I always get up early now (usually between 3am and 4am), but it used to be 5am. Now it's body aches, sinus headaches, you name it. Lucky if I get 6 hours of consecutive sleep.

Looks good Kevin. Those valve covers look like something I’ve never seen. Are they stock and metal?

Yep, stock olds covers, and they are steel. They are painted, but those show their age. I have the stock silver to repaint them, as well as the air cleaner.

Once I saw no mail flowing and looking at logs, a quick search said there was a problem. Ran the PowerShell Script to disable Malware and restarted Transport service, all was good to go.

I pulled it out of the garage (under her own steam) off the lift so I could change the oil in my other cars (2 others needed oil changes), so I decided to put the top down. Lisa likes it.

And yes, I have the factory hubcaps to put back on it.

Had a nice oil spot on the floor under the old girl.... went investigating.... rear main seal is leaking and it happens to be the factory rope seal.

Crap. I am going to ignore it for now in the hopes that the oil will expand it out some (not likely), and then later I'll have to pull the engine and pull the rope seals and install viton seals.

If I have to go that far (won't be soon), I'll pull everything out from under the hood and finish it like factory new, but it won't be tomorrow. I'm gonna enjoy it for a bit first.

Love those old tall snorkel air cleaners on vintage V8s. The car does have a certain sinister look, even in white.
Hey Kevin, try a spoonful of unfiltered honey in a cup of water before bed....it's got health benefits up the wassoo and is a mild sedative also.

Thanks, I'll check that out Jerry. I have to be careful as I'm hypoglycemic and follow a pretty strict diet to keep my blood sugars in check and level at all times. My Dad and Grandma had diabetes and I'm watching my diet to try preventing getting it.

Spent all day yesterday cutting the rubber off the transmission mounts so I could put steel in place of the rubber since you can't buy the mounts anymore and to have them re-vulcanized is about $500, and since I knew this would happen again, I decided to weld them so it'll never have to be addressed again, but I did it in such a way that they can be cut and re-vulcanized if the next owner chooses.

'64 Oldsmobile was swapped from Chevy in that aspect where the transmission has 2 mounts and the front of the engine has one, but much better design in my book.

Trying hard to sell it ..... even put the surfboard on top to push it....

I think I might take a break from rare cars for a bit..... locating the parts and fixing has been enjoyable, but tough getting decent used parts since most aren't available.

Going to start dealing with brakes tomorrow..... can't even buy drums for it anymore, but I've never even seen drums like this before. I'll post pics tomorrow of them. They are freaking huge.

That's the right front drum I pulled off. She must have had a brake job done within the last 2k to 3k miles as it's all pretty new and the shoes look brand new.

Also looks like a new wheel cylinder on the RF. I had to readjust the front right shoes as they were binding (had a difficult time turning it by hand even with the wheel on). I also repacked the bearings which looked good.

I'm getting ready to pull the RR off now and inspect. I don't think it has separate parking / emergency brake shoes, but I suspect the large bell on the drums (uses the same style drum on all four corners) was to help dissipate heat as this car is heavy at 4,400 lbs.

Edit:

Definitely only one set of shoes in the RR, and that one looks fine and wasn't binding.

I suspect whomever did the brakes in front didn't adjust them properly as they were binding and the brake pedal has no play at all and if you so much as breathe on the brake pedal it locked the brakes up.

Just did a spot tune on the Starfire in preparation to pull it out of the garage for her first "under the hood" bath.

Timing was off, but that's to be expected with a new timing chain and gears, but the dwell was off 6° and the carb hadn't been adjusted after I rebuilt it, and she's been running rich..... now she runs smooth and that will lead me into doing an actual full tune up after she gets her bath and some paint on the engine. All the parts for the tune up finally arrived, and even that was pricey at almost $300 (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, and condenser).
