Chevelle project update

Never thought a 24x40 garage would seem so small.

My shop is 30 x 55 and I haven't even started working on my projects yet (still finishing the house section of my barndoninium which is 30 x 36) and I'm all bunched up with no space to move around. I'm cleaning and rearranging today to reclaim space for painting base moldings, casings, doors and such.

I have 3 steel containers that have to be raised, leveled, and more vents put in and then I can move stuff out of my shop to gain more space, but that won't happen until CO of the house section and we move in.

Took it for a road test. Went well until a wheel came off.

No damage. It rode on the rotor until i pulled over. Helpful soul with a pickup and a jack stopped to help me get it back on. I was using the cheap Auto Zone lug nuts that came with the wheels and they completely stripped out.

Holy shit, that could have been catastrophic. Glad you weren't hurt and no damage. That was your Merry Christmas present.

Wow Glad nothing got damaged including Yourself

I was only going about 20mph. I figured my first road test would be a trip around the block. I got about 1/3 of the way.

Guy named Patrick stopped immediately and got out to help. Awesome guy. When we got the car home we hung out in the shop for a bit and chatted. He’s a single dad to a son who has leukemia. A lot of stuff on that guy’s shoulders.

Wow. That guy has it really tough. I hope he has a better future with his son.

It sounds like they may not have had the correct pitch.

Post failure analysis indicated they were metric nuts. The guy I bought the wheels from had them on an S10, so it probably would have happened to him eventually

Jeez, I thought this was a metaphor until I realized an actual wheel fell off. Glad you weren't hurt & the car is ok.

Well, that was effed up. I think I have it straightened out. I’ve got lugs on all wheels now.

The fronts are all 12x1.50 metric, the rears are 7/16x20.

The nuts the guy gave me with the wheels were the ones he was using with them. We took them off the truck. Turns out they are a mix of 12x1.50 and 1/2. They work on the front but not the rear obviously. So that was the issue. The weird part is my rear brakes are Camaro and should be 12x1.50.

Pays to check the details I guess

Moved on to the next thing. Hadn’t tightened the business ends of the front ARB yet snd was reminded why when I went to do It. Major interference with the steering. The steering arms must be in a different location with the C5 brakes. This was the bar I had before with no issues.

Not sure how to resolve this. I’ll have to sleep on it

Different length end links should get you the clearance you need

It’s lower than it was and has the adjustable uppers with tall ball joints, other than that everything is the same. I took some time to look it over and extending the end links I don’t think is going to fix it. The arms literally need to go through the exact same space occupied by the tie rods. They will have the wrong angle I think if I extend the end links. But this is a standard 70s GM bar so surely someone has had this issue. I’m going to have to put my medium sized brain to work on this

Ok I think I have it worked out. How much clearance do I need between the tie rods and the ARB? Right now it’s probably no more than half an inch.

Second test drive today, went well. I just took it around the cove and down to the next cove and back.

Still need to address quite few things, some more pressing.

I’ve been thinking more about the other cars lately, trying to get those going. I need to order parts for the 7 and drop the Honda block off at the machine shop.

Knocked a few things out today - final positioning of the arm rests, finished hooking up the wiper linkage, refurbished and installed the license plate light. Got parts for the fan temp switch and the vacuum TC lockup on the way.

When you getting the top done? I finger you're gonna wanna cruise and your wife might feel better just in case it looks like rain......
