Building Our Barndominium

The clock is set. Going for CO on Wednesday March 13th.

I was shooting for March 6th, but there are so many little things to do and there are small details I won't ignore just to get CO.

One more week is miniscule in the grand scheme and I will not compromise my standards for a quality job.

The whole house was hand sanded, vacuumed, and wiped with 91% alcohol again in peparation for the gloss polyaspartic topcoat. Polyaspartic topcoat is done. My timeline was a bit off though.... it's dry to the touch after 48 hours and withstand light traffic, but full cure is 7 days, so I'll have to work fast when it's fully cured (7 days) to trim out the house to meet the March 13th deadline I imposed to get the CO. That may be pushed out another week or two as my Mom's husband just got released for hospice care and is not expected to live another 7 days so I'll likely be going to a funeral shortly.

He's actually at my Mom's house in the living room in a hospital bed with 24 hour nursing care. Pretty expensive for my Mom as she's paying $850 a day which isn't covered by insurance (not sure why). It's his time as he's had Parkinson's for about 5 years now and he's in the end stages so his suffering will be over soon. We aren't really close to him, but out of respect we'll go to the funeral to support my Mom. Thanks though.

Laying down cabinet coat pure white satin on the casings, and will on the base moldings too. I hate brush strokes on woodwork. Everything including the doors are being sprayed for a flawless finish. Details matter to me.

A very good friend that use to work at a top notch auto & race car paint & body shop and painted 2 of my Harleys opened up a custom paint shop for cabinets, he was doing great till China Flu hit his business and many chain rest. around here closed down, I never thought about that as a business but he did great, I put a new ac system in for him late last year and talked with him about reshooting my Chevelle hood, 👍👍🙂 Kevin everything is looking Top Notch 👍👍🙂

I recently did this on an investment property, hate, absolutely hate doing trim and doors. Spraying is fantastic option! Crank the Stranglehold on a loop, it'll help.

I've always hated brushing trim and doors as the finish always sucks. If it must be brushed because it's already in place, I look for a paint that is self leveling so it alleviates the brush strokes, but doors always come off and are sprayed.

When spraying doors, I'll set them up in an accordion pattern (standing vertically) and spray both sides and the edges usually using my commercial airless sprayer, but in this case I'm using a standard air sprayer to get good atomization so it lays down smooth without excess paint and no runs.

I was inside all day installing vanities, sink tops, faucets, toilets, and finally grouted the main bath. Tomorrow I'll finish up the last little stuff, then finish painting all the base trim, then Monday start installing doors, casings, base moldings and cleanup. Then Tuesday I'll paint the shop wall and shop bath, install the toilet out there, then make and laminate the top for the vitreous china sink. I wanted something other than the ordinary round bowl, so I bought a square sink that looks "executive" since it'll be the "executive" bathroom. I may not make it for my Wednesday CO inspection I imposed on myself, so it may have to be Monday. We'll see what happens.

Spent 6 hours to drill 4 holes in the tile in the main shower. Never had porcelain tile so hard I couldn't drill into it with either a carbide bit or a glass and tile bit. Finally busted out my diamond core bit set and the smallest bit I had was 1/4" so I used that. I was installing the 9" bow shower bar for the shower curtain. Didn't see that coming. Definitely won't make it for CO / final inspection on Wednesday, so it'll be the following Monday (inspections only happen Monday -> Wednesday in our county).

The vanities and tops are just builders quality because we couldn't find anything we liked, so after CO (and me taking an overdue break), I'll custom build the vanities the way we want and then we'll have some granite tops with under mount vitreous china sinks made for them. We'll donate the builders quality vanities and tops to someone who needs them.

Is there a Habitat for Humanity store near you? Or you can advertise them on Facebook Marketplace?

Not near us, but our intention was to give them to someone who might be needy like a young family.
After some new homes being built in my friends old neighborhood I’m on the fence with Habitat for Humanity, Fed funded and Popping up all over lower income neighborhoods right now and I’m guessing for Affordable ( To Illegals) housing so IMO you’re doing the best thing donating to a needy family that really are in need 👍👍🙂 EDIT didn’t mean to get off subject and I’m thinking of looking into this more and start a thread 🙂
