What’d you work on today?

We are running into this at the dealership level all the time. Anything over 10-12 years old, model specific PCMs, BCMs, ABS modules and such are no longer available. We don't touch used electronics at all, no matter how much someone begs.
Maybe buy a Toyota or Honda ? My mom had a 1996 Camry that I sold 3 years ago and nothing was wrong with it !
I really haven't heard of anyone replacing computers on a car, but my family does mostly stick to Toyotas and Hondas.

In the late 90’s I couldn’t get my 84 T/A 305 HO 5 spd T top through emissions and at one point after National Auto Repair supposedly nation wide auto repair warranty had adjusted the 4bbl TBI it Did Not pass and 2 weeks later had a carb fire almost burning the car to bad to repair but I bought a parts car and fixed it, took the tbi off, under dash computer and Stomped them in the carport then threw them in the trash, pulled the Dist and swapped a friend for an HEI, bought a new Eddy 650 carb, timed it and passed emissions, gal said it passed like a new car 👍👍😁, check engine light stayed on so I put a piece of black electrical tape over it 😆

Those 305HOs were a great little motor. Really a well designed free breathing engine. Dad had a 305 in a '79 cutlass calais with the 016 heads and a qjet, IIRC the qjet was a torx/capped unit that he had to drill out the fasteners to rebuild that carb. It's been awhile.

The HEI and Eddy carb really woke that little engine up but I got a deal on a 355 later and put that in

There is an industry growing for module repair and programming. There are also small independent shops that are sought out for electronic repairs, but it is not a business for part switching mechanics, many of the issues involve corroded wires and terminals, often times the electronics are fine. A recent Vice Grip Garage had Derek repairing a 1981 Cadillac V8-6-4 and it turned out the PCM was bad. He found a place that had a refurbished unit, swapped the proms over and the car started and ran, first time in 20 years.

Stuff can be found but it will cost.

My dealer also stays away from used items, an Escape came in where the power steering module was bad, discontinued, they were having a hard time programming the used module.

I worked on an ac unit today cleaning the evap coil in a closet, then leveled the new dishwasher but now Im getting ready to change oil in my ‘09 Ram and after getting it jacked up, 3/4” plywood under jack & stands was getting ready to pull the drain plug then noticed how much bigger the Napa Gold filter was compared to the SuperTech at half the size so Im using my Drs quote on this type situation “Abort Mission” 🤣 so Ill wait to get another $14-$15 filter or find a bigger ST (Champion) filter that fits, Im also adding a new Fumoto drain plug for easy drain into a 5 gal jug not under the truck

AC coil clean today, installers used Code Required tamper resistant caps but after 5 yrs they were full of Crud and very hard to remove so since she had a fence yard and was very touchy about leaving gates unlocked I explained about the code but rec’d new brass caps at N/C 👍🙂 Oh other guys used old school thread locker 🙄on the caps, I tightened the stem 🤣

Paid to have the house pressure washed, would take me all day to do a sucky job, these guys knocked it out in 1 1/2 hrs.

I spent this evening pressure washing the porch furniture, Kevin, the pump works great! Thanks again.

Dug out the PC I had used for running my CNC machines and doing CAD over three years ago.
WOW, my eyes and memory have both failed in the last three years!
Have to get a much larger screen, maybe this is what those super-size TV's are really for? (Doubt the PC could drive one.)
Going to be rough getting back into the CAD groove, I never was truly proficient.
May have to start with a simpler program and work my way back up again.

A PC can drive a 1080p or even a 4k screen despite the size if the PC is equipped to handle it. I used to have my laptop (with docking station) drive the 37" with 4 individual screens (fit 4 individual screens inside the 37" monitor). When I was doing engineering work I needed multiple screens for all the work I was doing (mutlitasking).

My work had to provide me with larger monitors due to my sight issues, I guess that puts me into a "protected class"

I'm not real good with operating PC's, do most things on a Mac.
Somewhere there should be a way to look up max screen size capability.
I did find a larger screen to use for now, but even bigger would be better.

If it has an HDMI port you can go to a larger monitor / TV easily. There are some adapters to go from USB to HDMI, so that might be worth a look.

Old system, I will have to look into what it can handle and are video cards still available for it.
For now I will have to get by with the 27" I dug out of storage.
That seems to be the common limit for an affordable monitor, but 48"-60" TV's are cheap.
I'm guessing the TV's are lower resolution.
I have to take Mom into the city tomorrow so may stop at China-Mart to see what the options look like.
Not really critical until I get back into the swing of CAD and have the VMC.
But the 14" monitor was impossible.

I was standing in a long line at Ace hardware a few years ago

heck I seen a 52” tv at either Sams club or Wally World for about $150

Bought a roll up door opener from vevor.com for $130 and am custom fitting it to my 10' x 10' roll up doors. I made a template this morning and am waiting on a 1 1/16" drill bit to core out a schedule 40 steel pipe so I can extend the centerline support bar (what the door rolls up on) and then I can install the first of four openers (all the doors will have electric openers). I made the rudimentary template from the lid of a mud bucket.

It's the video card that does all the work. Cards have been able to do 4k video for quite a few years (but most monitors don't support 4k).
And you don't need 4k, only 1080p like kevin said. Almost any video card can do that.

The 27" monitor you have should be perfect. Tv's make lousy computer monitors.
There is no "screen size limit." Either a card does 1080p or 4k, and will display on any size screen.
The bigger the screen, the more you need 4k (like on my 98" tv).
