Chevelle project update

Got the header finished finally and installed. Just glued the vinyl fabric to the top frame. I was going to order the strip from one of the parts places until I discovered I can just go to Hobby Lobby and get an entire yard for half what they want for a 6” wide strip. Picking up more SEM Trim Black today to paint the trim bits going back on around the windshield on the insid, then I’ll have to install a windshield. Called Safelite thinking they could just come over and put one in but when I said “1969” they begged off. Don’t understand why, it’s just a damn windshield. Oh well. Guess I’ll do this myself too.

There are small glass companies that will do the install. I ran into the same thing. I think part of it is the boding of the glass, it was done differently in the past and the glass was not a structural component like it is now, just a thought.

I installed mine in my 67 using urethane and a foam dam so you don't see the sealant.
Is urethane the "modern method"? I don't really care which as long as it isn't noticeable ?
Why do these companies not want to install windshields on classic cars ?
Should I care what method they use ?

Liability. Consider that a windshield is a safety component, albeit much less on a classic car than a modern structural component car. The process for using urethane needs a virgin base, or a good chemical bond to it's base layer. That layer system goes down to the metal, which in the majority of classics has been infected with rust. So, unless the glass guy can limit their liability to just the glass bond, which will always be challenged in a lawsuit, it's just simpler to avoid them altogether. Best I can do is shoulder tap a side job jockey, and that isn't easy anymore since they do just fine without my business it seems. I've debated this with Raven several times on the other forum, and my stance has always been that butyl is just good of a bond to your base paint than most people's painting process. In urethane apps, the urethane goes over primer, not topcoat. You use the primer supplied with your urethane or compatible with your urethane, the primer is two part. Truth is, most classics are not professionally painted, so what the glass guy sees before install will never satisfy them.

Looks like I’ll be imstalling my own windshield.

Post where you bought your stuff ? I need all the same things. :)
Windshield and all weatherstrips for a convertible

Windshield came from Auto City Classics on ebay. The other stuff I just looked for name brands like Mstep or Softseal and took the best price.

I bought the windshield from that place because they were free shipping

Just found a set of staggered 18” wheels on FB. Guy says he bought them for a 69 GTO project that never materialized. He says they sat for 6 months and were never on a car. Wheels are Vision 142 and tires are Achilles Sport, two different tread patterns - 2x Sport and 2x Sport 2. He’s asking $1000, which provided the tires are not out of date is a pretty decent deal. They are chrome, not what I was going for but they’ll do. Going to look tomorrow.

Windshield is installed. The rest of the window area trim will go on tomorrow, then the interior.
