Building Our Barndominium

When I remodeled my house 3 years ago, I put an ad in Craigslist and listed it in the "free section" and gave a good working stove to a family who badly needed it.
It was a good feeling helping them out.
I gave my fridge to my neighbor across the street.

We want to help those less fortunate as we've been blessed. Helping those out in need (a hand up, not a hand out) is what we're aiming for. We have spare appliances we keep as a "just in case" insurance policy.

I used that same style of door, but I woosed out and bought the pre-hung.......saves so much time. I'd approach a self-built house the same way you're doing it, and afraid it'd take me several years to geterdone. ...... I had an apprentice back 25 years or so that had spent the last 10 years of his life building a home, probably 3000 sq. ft. and fancy as fuck. He used cash all the way, not sure he ever finished it, and he was the most single-bound for eternity bachelor I've ever met and can lay money he never had kids or a wife.

Yep, when kids aren't in the mix there's tons of money to play with.

These are the same style doors we had in our last house and Lisa liked them. It was a coincidence my brother had gotten them from HD in a bulk buy and he didn't like them. The down side is they were just slabs which is why I had to build the frames. They are also solid core doors and heavy as hell. Had to buy 2 doors to match and couldn't get them smooth like the doors my brother gave me, so I bought hollow core doors with grain texture and have been skimming the doors smooth with mud. The solid core doors cost $450 a piece and the hollow core were about $90 each.

$450 for a solid core slab or prehung ?

Doesn't bother me, it's your house and if you're happy with it, it's good enough. I'm OCD and a perfectionist, so it has to be perfect for my standards.
You were also a tradesman, I had to learn on my own and have made a ton of mistakes that I did not realize were mistakes until after they were done.

My largest home project was finishing a basement. That was brutal, the kids were little and I could only work on it when they went to bed, somewhere between 7 and 8 and only use screws as not to wake anyone up. I would stay up till 1 or 2 every night and wake up at 5:30 to go to work.

My SIL and he husband have been redoing a house for over 2 years, like you he is a perfectionist, we can see the stress on their marriage. Other life issues are geeing into their way of completion. Their son is not a person that uses his hands and my BIL has been tough on him because of it. The kid is going to collage in Charlotte and plans on staying there after graduation and one of the reasons is the relationship with his father.

I can understand the father being hard because he wants his son to be able to work with his hands and do things on his own. My son Paul was the same way and didn't care to learn, but now he's learning on the job and has become more involved in learning how to do things mechanically and construction wise. Each person is gifted with talents, but some are more gifted than others in certain areas. Not a bad thing, it's just the way God made them.

I tried explaining these things to my stepson after he graduated college, he said he didn't need to know how to do home repairs, when he's ready he'll buy a brand new house , Yeah they stay Brand New Forever lol, I just chuckled and said OK

I am a firm believer in if a person does not want to learn something, they won't. My son is also not big on using his hands but he is learning that he does need to do work on his own rather than hire someone. When he asks for me to show him how to do something, I do it but then I make him do it. My nephew may do that but I doubt it. He is running the kid off and IMO that is the worst thing you can do to a child.

When my stepson got his DL he wanted to buy a brand new car with the $ he saved working at Sam’s Club as cashier, we talked him out of that and gave him his moms 96 Explorer Sport that she bought in 98, I had it painted, new brakes & tires, when oil change time came at first he wanted me to show him how, he was changing about every 1,000-1,500 miles and 3rd time he just handed me the oil and filter and went inside to talk to mom 😕 She sent his Ass right back out but he never did get under the car lol
